SB 1127: Child Custody

January 31, 2012

Best Interest of the Child: P/S NOW members contacted members of the Senate Public Safety and Human Services Committee and asked them to vote "No" on SB 1127. We believe this factor, listed directly after the domestic violence factor, would discourage victims from disclosing their abuse, especially it there isn't a mountain of evidence to prove the violence took place. Another bill, SB 1249 has more appropriate language and will be heard in another couple of weeks.

Roe V Wade Anniversary - January 22, 2012

Open Mic for Reproductive Rights: In celebration of the Roe v. Wade anniversary, pro-choice supporters and feminists gathered at Fair Trade Cafe in downtown Phoenix to have an Open Mic for Reproductive Rights.

Roe v. WadeThrough personal storied we learned and were reminded about how individuals can be greatly impacted by laws and policies against reproductive rights. Representatives from ACT Arizona (http://abortionconnection.org/), a local organization assisting women going through abortion procedures discussed the significance of their work in our community and how restrictions have hurt women. Speakers also discussed the significance of reproductive rights as well as the importance of being involved in promoting social change. We left the event feeling inspired and energized to fight for women's rights.
