White Ribbons - July 12, 2011

White Ribbon P/S NOW members joined Unite Arizona! in handing out White Ribbons at the All Star Game at Chase Field. The crowds were cold and hostile toward the volunteers. Too bad they did not stop to read the meaning of the white ribbons which stand for "support of the celebration of our rich culture in Arizona and trying to find rational and humane solutions to fix our broken immigration system." The white ribbons indicated peace and unity.

Dignity Not Detention Vigil

Vigil TestimonialJuly 7, 2011

P/S NOW members attended a vigil to support immigrants' rights at the Pinal County Jail in Florence, AZ. The Dignity Not Detention vigil was sponsored by ACLU-AZ to call attention to the indignities and injustices suffered by immigrant detainees. The ACLU-AZ is also calling for an end to detention contracts between Pinal County Jail and ICE. Currently there are no standards or accountability in place to help detainees against unjust treatment. There will be another Dignity Not Detention Vigil in August. The young man in the photo tells the story of his days in detention and how it effects the families.

Movie Night

North Country FilmMay 29, 2011

P/S NOW coordinated with AZ NOW for a screening of "North Country," starring Charlize Theron, Sissy Spacek, Frances McDormand and Woody Harrelson. The film is based on the true story of Lois Jenson who fought and won the first class-action sexual harassment lawsuit (Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Co.). She was threatened, insulted, ogled, fondled, belittled, attacked and called filthy names. But in the end, she won! This landmark case changed sexual harassment laws.

Anthem Town Hall Meeting with Ben Quale,

May 16, 2011

Members of Phoenix/Scottsdale NOW attended a town hall meeting in Anthem where Ben Quale would be hosting questions from the audience. Our attendees were not chosen to speak. If they had been chosen they would have asked Quale, "How can Congress possibly justify continuing to give $4 billion a year in taxpayer subsidies to Exxon Mobil - who made $10.17 billion in profits in the first quarter of this year alone, and the Big Five Oil companies who made nearly $32 billion in profits altogether?"

What is that about?

Pride Parade 2011, April 16, 2011

The float that we drove in the 2011 Phoenix Pride Parade was splendidly decorated with NOW issue rounds, balloons, streamers and accompanied by gallant P/S NOW members. But we still didn't win a prize! What wrong with the judges? Join us next year and we'll make a bigger statement.

It was a lovely day and a good place to met women and families with the same goals for reproduction rights as NOW. Did you know that 73% of Arizona Counties have no abortion provider? The Arizona Senate is anti-choice. The Arizona House if anti-choice. Arizona subjects abortion providers to burdensome restrictions not applied to other medical professionals.
